This sentiment often expressed by Santa Sebag-Montefiore’s father is also one I hold dearly. If we ‘count our blessings’ we will be much happier, and we will be able to appreciate the things we have rather than pine for the things we don’t (have). It was a sentiment my father taught me also and more importantly it is consistent with the ethic of Jesus. The apostle Paul wrote “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you.” The more I am able to abide by this advice, the happier I’ll be.
